Tangerines – Satsuma

Tangerines, the fruit from tangerine trees (Citrus reticulata), a small citrus tree. Similar to oranges, not round but oval in shape.

Tangerines hold a special place in our hearts — sweet, juicy, pure and especially nutritious.

We cultivate our trees in complete harmony with the soil that nourishes them. For this reason, we choose the right variety compatible with the region’s climate and soil properties.

The main variety which can be found in Leonidio is the tangerine Satsuma, also known in Japan as Mikan. Satsuma tangerines are large tangerines from Japan with a soft outer peel and a sour but refreshing flesh and not to mention, very few pits.

Tangerine production in Leonidio reaches an average of 1,500 tons annually; from which 1,000 tons are Satsuma and the remaining 500 tons are Clementine.

Nutritional value of Tangerines

Tangerines, a fruit which symbolizes longevity, belong to the citrus family along with oranges, grapefruit and lemons. A rich source of potassium, it contributes to the reduction of blood pressure. The mineral bromine that is present in tangerines is responsible for their soothing effect while its dried peel is used in traditional Chinese medicine.

What is more, the tangerine peel has therapeutic properties; it facilitates digestion and is good for the stomach. All varieties of tangerines (Clementine, Satsuma, and Tangor) are rich in carotenoids. A 100gr serving contains approximately 53 calories.

Apart from being delicious, tangerines have proven to be beneficial to our health. According to Japanese researchers, studies have shown that citrus consumption can reduce the chances of liver cancer.

It is interesting to note that in Great Britain alone, 2,800 new cases of liver cancer are diagnosed every year.

Therefore, according to two Japanese studies, which were made public in 2006, tangerine consumption significantly reduces the chances of liver cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Researchers underline that the secret behind tangerines lies in its Vitamin A content, especially carotenoids, which are not only beneficial to our health, but is also responsible for their bright orange colour.

Japanese experts from the National Institute of Fruit Tree Science in the city, Mikabi, and their colleagues at the Perfectural University of Medicine in Kioto proceeded in two independent studies of tangerines. Their findings confirm the beneficial properties of citrus.

To sum up, experts note that a daily consumption of at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, fortify our bodies with vitamins and minerals, thus drastically reducing chances of heart disease, which is why consumption of a wide variety of fruit and vegetables is important.
